How to prepare for an AI interview
Prepare for an AI interview by testing your camera, microphone and connection in advance, preparing three or four detailed stories from your own work, and answering in a clear structure: situation, what you did, what resulted.
The most common cause of failure is not difficulty — it is vague, short answers with no concrete detail. Specificity is the single thing most worth practising.
Before you start
- Test the camera and microphone in the same browser you will use.
- Use a wired or strong connection; dropouts mid-answer count against you.
- Sit facing a light source, plain background, no interruptions.
- Keep your resume on screen — you will be asked about specifics on it.
- Have water. You will be talking more than you expect.
Prepare four stories
Almost every question can be answered from a small set of well-prepared examples. Write out four before you start, each with numbers in it:
- A hard problem you solved, with the detail of how.
- Something that went wrong and what you changed afterwards.
- A decision made under real constraints, and the trade-off.
- The work you are most confident defending in detail.
Answer in three parts
| Part | Say |
|---|---|
| Context | What the situation was, briefly. |
| Action | What you specifically did, in detail. This is the part that scores. |
| Result | What happened, with a number where you have one. |
Keep each answer to roughly 60–90 seconds.
The mistakes that cause fails
- Answers under 20 seconds. Too thin to score.
- "We" instead of "I". The rubric looks for your contribution.
- Rambling past two minutes. Structure beats volume.
- Reading a script. It is audible, and it flattens the follow-ups.
- Claims that contradict your resume. Consistency is explicitly checked.
- Leaving it too long. Roles fill while the invitation sits unopened.

Common questions
How long does an AI interview take?
Most run between 15 and 30 minutes, though this varies by platform and role. Set aside a clear hour so you are not rushed.
What should I wear for an AI interview?
The same thing you would wear to a video call with a client in your industry. The format changes nothing about that expectation.
Can I use notes during an AI interview?
Brief prompts to jog your memory are fine and sensible. Reading full scripted answers aloud is audible in the delivery and tends to hurt rather than help.
