Why it is required
These platforms receive far more applications than human recruiters could screen. An automated interview lets every candidate be assessed against the same questions and the same rubric within days, rather than a fraction of candidates being seen at all.
It also removes scheduling entirely — you take it whenever you like, which is the only reason international candidates get screened at the same speed as local ones.
Can you skip it?
No. On platforms that use one, it is the gate. A strong resume, a referral or years of experience do not bypass it, because nothing reaches a human until the interview is scored.
What happens if you do not complete it

Several do. After onboarding you may be invited into a Discord or Slack workspace, and in practice that is where most day-to-day questions get answered — how a rubric works, what a task expects, what to do when something is ambiguous.
How much human interaction is there in this work?
Very little, by design. You complete tasks from a queue on your own schedule, and support runs through the community channel rather than through meetings or calls. It suits people who prefer asynchronous work.
How often do the platforms pay?
